Op-ed: President Aoun’s Monk-like Existence Should Inspire Us All

Given how busy everyday life can be for us college students, it can be easy to forget the importance of the simple pleasures of life. Fortunately, we already have an excellent role model here on campus to guide us back to the basics; our very own university president Joseph Aoun. He lives a simple life, taking home a meager $1.8 million compensation package, and clocking in at only the 27th highest paid university president in the US, his ascetic existence should be an inspiration to each and every one of us.

While other university presidents buy yachts and private jets, our ascetic president settles for the humble Lamborghini and flies first class instead. While other university presidents live in massive mansions complete with entire teams of servants, President Aoun, or Humble Joe as we like to call him, lives in a simple penthouse with just a single butler. Let his everyday sacrifice and spartan life guide you every step of the way, regardless of where, when, or who you are.

By cutting away the materialistic desires that society can be all too quick to foist upon us all, we can learn to appreciate the simple pleasure of an expensive car, or the joys of a five course dinner at a restaurant with just one Michelin star. And maybe, just maybe, through Humble Joe’s example, we can all be just a little bit more content with what we have.
